Contractors: Safety Risk or Untapped Ally?

Let's be honest: when a group of contractors shows up 15 minutes late, one guy is already lighting a cigarette next to the flammable cabinet, and no one seems to know where the eye wash station is, we all feel a little panicked.

When it comes to safety, contractors can feel like the wild card.
But what if we're not playing the right game?

We Act Like They're Strangers...

Too often, people treat contractors like guests instead of team members.
They get a quick orientation video, a site map from 2012, and maybe a five-minute tour. Then we want them to follow our rules, procedures, and culture, even though we haven't really shared those things with them in a meaningful way.

Is it any surprise that the number of incidents goes up when contractors are on site?

According to OSHA’s multi-employer worksite guide ( https://www.osha.gov/sites/default/files/publications/OSHA3886.pdf ), host employers are responsible for ensuring all workers—including contractors—are properly trained, briefed, and protected.

The True Cost of "Just Get It Done"

When leaders care more about getting things done quickly than safely, contractors are pushed to take shortcuts.

You know it:

"We just need that scaffolding up before lunch."

"Can you get around the lockout? It won't take long.

"Be careful; the safety guy won't be here until tomorrow."

That kind of stress doesn't save time. It adds injuries, investigations, tickets, and more. and a big hit to your reputation.

The Construction Association's 2025 Safety Best Practices report ( https://www.safetyandhealthmagazine.com/articles/26959-construction-association-report-identifies-5-key-safety-best-practices ) says that companies that put a lot of emphasis on getting executives involved in safety saw a 49% drop in incidents..

So… What If We Flipped the Script?
What if we stopped thinking of contractors as a problem and started treating them like friends?

This is what it looks like:

1) Real onboarding— Not just the video that says "don't fall in the pit." Give them your emergency plans, safety contacts, and tell them who to call if something doesn't feel right. The Wolters Kluwer Contractor Safety Guide ( https://www.wolterskluwer.com/en/expert-insights/contractor-safety-management-best-practices ) lays out a clear way to hire new employees and keep track of their work.

2) Shared ownership—Let contractors help lead toolbox talks and JSAs. Talk to them about the risks they see. They probably saw dangers that you didn't.

3) Checks for language and reading skills— Do your safety documents make sense and are they in the right language? If not, that's a quiet way to set yourself up for failure.

4) Forget about "common sense." Because what's common in your crew might be completely foreign to theirs.

Contractors Are the Canary in the Culture Mine

If your contractors are regularly working unsafely, it’s not just a contractor issue—it’s a culture issue.
They’re telling you (often with a near miss) where your systems are brittle. That’s feedback. Use it.
Some companies are getting proactive with tech: firms like Shawmut are using AI to monitor contractor safety behaviors across 30,000+ workers—tracking everything from fall protection use to risky movements—without violating trust ( https://www.businessinsider.com/ai-for-worker-site-safety-in-construction-2025-4 ).

Real Talk: Some of the Best Safety Ideas I’ve Heard Came from Temps
Yes. Not from the experienced foreman. Not from the manager of EHS.

The guy on day three said, "Why don't we put tags on these hoses so we don't mix them up?"

Easy. Clever. Useful.
You can only get those ideas if you make it safe for people to speak up, whether they are contractors or not.

Final Thought: Respect Is a Piece of PPE, Too
Contractors know when they are being treated like a risk instead of a partner.
So turn it around:

1) Don't yell, teach.
2) Don't make assumptions; listen.
3) Set the bar high and help them reach it.

It's your site, but it's our safety.
