Do you know the "tolerance zone" regulations for your state's 811 program?
Here in Kentucky, we have a 24" tolerance zone on both sides of the utility line in which you can only hand dig. Some states are 36", others only 18". 👷🏻♂️
Before digging, be sure to check your state-specific requirements to ensure you're not violating any laws, but more importantly, so you don't hit a utility line and cause property damage, an injury, or a fatality. ✅️

18" in Maryland Miss Utility is your friend :D

Always keep in mind the Miss Dig system is not perfect.
Many utilities In our area are using third party locators for their locates. With fiber deployments at a all time high, it has led to a overwhelmed system with more as marked lines or unmarked lines altogether. Please have your crews do a quick assessment of the area before digging. If they see pedestals or underground transformers in the area with no marks, take pause. If you have flags and pot hole with no wire call in and make sure that ticket has bee cleared. Phone and fiber will cost money gas and electric may cost lives.
