Does anyone do fire extinguisher training in house?
If you do run it in house (or are a consultant that provides this training), I was wondering what materials you use to perform the training? Obviously a handful of extinguishers, but I’m more curious about the equipment that provides the controlled fire (if you do a controlled fire demo).
Thanks!!

Consultants would do it for us. So unsure - also I would like to know more about the controlled fire too.

Also, is it mandatory to have hands on fire extinguisher training?

In the past before becoming a consultant, we purchased a live fire training prop from Bullard. As a consultant now, I have my own prop from a company called Leader (made in France) that works really well for our trainings. When I worked as a career firefighter, we would do the good ol' fashioned diesel fuel burn in a 55-gallon drum.
Brandy, to answer your questions, it depends on what you have in your company's emergency action plan. If you designate people to stay back and use the portable fire extinguishers during an incipient stage fire, then yes, hands-on is required per 1910.157(g)(3). However, if you simply put them throughout the facility to meet the requirements and the use of them during an emergency is optional, then no, hands-on would not be required.
It also explains it here in the last paragraph of the first section:

We just had a safety fair and the fire department did fire extinguisher training with an Ipad on top of a fire extinguisher. It was really cool
Our fire extinguisher company conducts the training for our employees. We use a small pan 3”x18”x12” with a mixture of diesel and gas for employees to extinguish.

I'm working in a Safety Advisor and Training Company in Spain -ASPY PREVENCION-. We provide (real) fire training in company about portable extinguishers, Hoses, Rescues, autonomous breathing equipment, blind conditions, flashover, etc. We use gas pans, gas classroom trailer, real extinguishers or simulatd by water. Our costumers are any company wich needs to teach employees, from an office worker to a firefighter team. Too bad, we are very far from USA. If someone wants to talk about an alliance, why not?

We do all our training on site. We have setup an area where we can do a controlled burn. We train employees that are required by our EAP, but we also offer it to employees who want to learn so they can use it at home if needed.
