Culture change

Changing operational culture. In my environment, fellow military members can be very dismissive of safety on the jobsite. In their mind, safety is often third on the priority list, behind time and quality. I understand that the mission is always going to cause a speed focused culture, but there is no reason to dismiss something that carries such an impact. People have to remember that a job will always be done faster and more efficiently if no one is injured.

One big thing that I’ve been struggling is getting the back log information for a project. Meaning I am working on a project that has potential to save thousands but they do not have the data to prove that this change will be a money saver. I thought most manufacturing companies kept this much information so they could see how small changes affect production. Or even see if the cleaning is taking longer than expected.

Managing long-term projects. I have the job of what was previously two people and an intern (2.5 full-time persons). I love the day-to-day but struggle to manage the bandwidth of longer lead items. What I recommend to others - because they are extremely helpful for me - is a to-do list. One daily and one long-term.
Getting the funding for projects is tough. Justifying cost is always a challenge, especially for projects over $10k

Management, oh gosh. I’m not sure if anyone else is experiencing this but providing guidance and resources to change safety culture is so hard without input from management. I get so much backlash for making suggestions or for bringing something up that will receive backlash later. I know this is not the case for every company or safety person, but it def is for me since starting out after school. The good thing is I am getting valuable experience and understanding what a bad safety management system and culture looks like.
