MSHA training requirements
We are starting a project on a MSHA site and our client is requiring the 24 hour MSHA training for all onsite employees. The mine is categorized under part 48.25, which requires 24 hours of training.
My question is there a difference in information between the 24 hours of training of part 46 & part 48?
We typically don't do anything with mines so I am out of my element & when I called MSHA, they said they would have to get back with me.

Interesting question! I do not work with MSHA sites but I understand that Part 46 is for sand, gravel, stone, crushed stone, limestone, clay, shell dredging, and colloidal phosphate mining. Part 48 is for all other surface and underground mining operations.
If your current job only requires Part 48, I would start there. If your company plans to expand to more MSHA work, then you can entertain the Part 46 training since they are not interchangeable.

Hi, Jacob!
I work for Compliance Training Online and yes, there's a big difference between the two as Adam mentioned.
On top of that, Part 48 training can only be administered by a certified MSHA Instructor because of the additional hazards. Part 46 only has to be proctored by a competent person.

Jacob, the training topics you get are outlined on the task matrix of the MSHA approved training plan. Either the "mine (contractor)" or the approved instructor will have an MSHA approved Training plan. If you will be on site as a contractor or consultant the information may be different than those who are operators at the site. Part 48 (surface) will cover Part 46, so in my opinion it's better to get the 48 and just stay recurrent on refreshers.

Thank you everyone for the help. We have located a MSHA approved trainer to completed part 48 training and have confirmed this as the site requirement. I appreciate the input & information!

I am late to the party but want to add this for future reference. The answers were great and covered the topic. There are some great in person and online options now for part 46 and part 48. I work for a company that does both and would be happy to answer any questions in the future on topics.
