Off the Clock Safety
Is there something you do now that you didn't do before you started working in safety? I have found myself being way more aware of my surroundings when I am out in public. I notice extinguishers, exit routes, etc. I started wearing a reflective vest when it starts to get dark when I take my dog for a walk.
Prior to starting my career, I wouldn't have thought about any of those things.

Actually since getting into the safety field, as a farmer off the clock, we have really made some changes in our farm practices to be safer!

Always looking!!
It’s why I wrote The Safety Habit, I think people can benefit from tapping into how we think more frequently than they do.

I bring custom hearing protection with me everywhere now. Bars, concerts, airplanes (they are vented, don't worry), etc.
In public, I always try to peak at construction sites or look for fire/life safety concerns.

I mentally audit everyone's work in my head. I check construction sites for fall protection, I look for PPE, and I watch people's work practices (sometimes I will stop people).

I definitely have second guessed myself when tinkering around the house, especially when I get into my redneck engineering zone. I look back at some of the dumb things I have done at home and think, I'm lucky to be alive. Not sure if that's related to a safety profession or just getting older and wiser. LOL

I check to make sure Fire Extinguishers are inspected way more than a normal person should. LOL
But definitely have a raised awareness for all things safety related that I would never think about before.
