Trade safety
Anyone else struggle with understanding safety of different trades? As someone with an EHS background things like welding and electrical are pretty foreign to me. I find it awkward making recommendations on things I don’t have a fundamental understanding of.
That being said it’s part of the job. How do you guys approach trade safety that you don’t have a full understanding of?

I try to work with the employees doing the task/process/operation so I can see exactly what they are doing and how they do it. I ask a lot of questions.
Researching the task/process/operation also helps me learn about the technical aspects of the work, specifically any physical or chemical hazards.
Talking to the craftspeople and observing is key to understanding the hazards they face.

Read the standards, ask other professionals. Learn something new by talking to the trades.
