Safety Stand Down Week 5/3-5/7
With Safety Stand Down Week quickly approaching I wanted to gather some information on what everyone has done in the past and what they are currently looking to do for the upcoming week? Tool box talks, demos, videos, etc.

Hi - I begin each meeting with safety and health. Relating the importance within everyday life. The car, the store, the parking lot, exercise, data .... The walk concept is very powerful - ID 5 things that shouldn’t be the way they are and as a result might create a hazard. Sharing how you see the world through a safety/health lens is powerful.

We do not have a lot of company drivers but I plan on discussing distracted driving during my next meeting. Driving is relatable to most people and we are becoming increasingly distracted by all of the technology around us.

When I have dedicated time allowed to focus on safety I do a few things.
I briefly cover the heavy hitters in the my industry: falls, chemical hazards and protection, confined spaces, and explosive operations.
Since these are common in my industry I spend a great deal of time in these areas the rest of the year so don't focus my attention in those areas.
I will use remaining time to cover uncommon topics. Such as:
Health and safety effects from sleep issues
Eye strain for computer use
Work place violence and avoidance
Mental health
Communication and everyone's role in the safety culture
These are just a few of mine and what I like to do.

Not just a safety walk, but as part of it, reach out to people, talk to them about how they feel about their duties and how they can relate their tasks to their own safety. Have them relate their tasks to their safety procedures, link in their mind that they are part of the solution and that they should take care of themselves and their colleagues.

Coming from a training company, the majority of our staff are office workers, so we go really in depth with posts on office ergonomics on social media since it tends to affect a pretty good % of people in general.
For this next one, we'll do slips, trips, and falls, I think.
In the past, I was prior military, but then continued to work on base through one of the support entities, so we pretty much followed that. We had various things that we would do to help make it fun - contests, and demos, but active duty we had safety talks.
I think the coolest thing was when I set up for our workers to hang out with the fire department. They lit fires and we got to practice putting them out. I'm sure there was more to that, but that was the most memorable...
Now I'm starting to think I got in the wrong professions and should have been a fire fighter...
