The business of safety.
I think the business of safety can be overlooked. I have a few questions to see how I compare to other safety professionals.
How often do you price our your safety supplies?
I price out all of the items I purchase at least once a year. This include PPE, fire extinguishers, first aid, boots, medical screenings and drug screens.
What is the average cost of safety at your site per employee?
Last year we spend about $1,680 per non-office employee on safety.

We have 235 people in our plant and about 2500 each production employee. Keep in mind we are a chemical plant too.
At my last job we used Fastenal. I liked them. They were willing to work with me on price and price match things as well. At my current job we use Grainger. I haven't heard many good things but I don't have the power to make any changes.

We’re probably around $2-3k per employee. That’s just an estimate - we have a good group of suppliers we work with and who understand our process so it’s unlikely we’d switch anytime soon
We use grainger and they’ve monopolized our PPE, training, consulting. This was established well before I arrived, but they’ve sunk their claws in so deep breaking any aspect of that relationship would require some infrastructure changes on the purchasing end.
I’ve priced out some local companies and convinced my manager to start streaming them in, but you bring up a good point. It’s important to look at your budget and find ways to save and spend elsewhere. I’m not sure the cost per employee but probably between $3-4k per year
