DOT Regulations
Hello Everyone.
At my company we use pickup trucks that we hitch small work trailers to for residential construction. They are just over 10,000lbs with the trailer attached.
Does any one know what DOT requirements we should be following? All drivers get a DOT medical cards, unsure of what else is needed.
Is a dot number required?
Drivers log?
Stop at weigh stations?
Random drug & alcohol testing?
Inspections?
Any advice or info would be appreciated!

Hi Michael,
It varies state to state. Here in KY, any commercial vehicle, meaning a company vehicle regardless of what it is, over 10,001 lbs GVWR or GCWR needs to have a DOT number. If you work within 100 miles of your home base or shop, you don't need a drivers log. I believe NH is the same as KY as far as the DOT number for weight ratings. I am not sure about the drivers log though. I would check with the NH DOT to make sure. Each state has different specs on stopping at weigh stations. Most say 10K lbs GVWR or GCWR or more needs to stop at weigh stations. If you keep your combined or gross weight of truck and trailer under 10,001 lbs, then you don't have to worry about any of it.

What do you guys carry in the trailer? Pretty sure you’d be exempt, but this is pretty far from my realm so I’ll leave it to the other experts in the forum.
EDIT: Eric had a much more educated answer than me so I retract my statement
