Competent person for fall protection inspection
Sorry if this has already been asked. My understanding is that fall protection needs to get inspected before each use, after a fall, and annually. The latter two inspections to be done by a "competent person". To become competent is there a specific certification you need, or can it just be someone who's familiar with the process?

I was taught that a harness that has been exposed to any fall-stress is a harness that gets replaced.

Hello, I conduct the fall protection once a quarter at my facility and operators are charged with inspecting it before each use.

Hello,
A competent person is not the same as a certified person. OSHA 1910.140 states; a competent person means a person who is capable of identifying existing and predictable hazards in any personal fall protection system or any component of it, as well as in their application and uses with related equipment, and who has authorization to take prompt, corrective action to eliminate the identified hazards. So it can be someone familiar with the process and understands what they are looking and how everything is supposed to work. There are several online classes that you can watch to get certified to inspect fall protection if you wanted to. I have been inspecting fall protection for many years and just got my certification yesterday actually.
