Monthly Safety Quiz: Questions/Prizes
I am doing a monthly safety quiz to boost EHS engagement. An example question is: "What does PASS stand for? Email your answer to EHS to be entered in a raffle to win a fire extinguisher for your home!". What are some other questions/prizes you would offer your company?

Not sure what industry you're in, but try to cover some site specific info and topics.

Where are SDS's kept

Love it! I think these kinds of activities are great to drive home important EHS information. My first thought was some sort of fall protection question - what's the difference between fall restraint and fall arrest?

How about "Do you know who to contact if an incident were to occur?" One issue that my company encounters often is who to call during an emergency. It's not always as simple as calling 911. My company has multiple facilities that are inaccessible to the general public 24/7; therefore, we encourage workers to contact our internal security department first. Once contacted, the security team will reach out to 911 and can be on standby (with doors unlocked and open) once emergency crews arrive. If someone calls 911 directly from inside the facility (bypassing security), the emergency responders will show up to the building, but they will not be able to get in without encountering a slight delay with security as they scramble to figure out the situation.
One of my focuses is around office ergonomics. In the early stages of the pandemic, we sent many of our employees to work from home (roughly 10,000 office workers). This presented a challenge since their setups at home were not necessarily ergonomically correct. We completed a campaign to educate people on home office ergonomics over the course of the year. We then held a contest on our company social media site that simply asked employees to share which ergonomic tips helped them the most. Submission was entered for a chance to win one (of five) Amazon gift cards with $20 each. This meant five individuals won a gift card. Overall, we were able to engage over 7,000 employees in the contest, but more importantly, employees were able to share their ideas via our company platform. This helped promote buy-in for employees.
I really like the ideas and prizes others have shared - especially since they are linked to safety. Other considerations for prizes might include smoke/fire/CO detectors, first aid kits, bike helmets for kids, or a pair of safety boots (steel-toe, metatarsal, chemical, etc.). Another thought is to put together a list of POSSIBLE prizes and let the winner pick from the list.

We are going to roll out Safety Bingo soon where people can win company merch and other prizes. Worked great at my last company.

You could target your questions toward trending topics at your site. If you track certain metrics (good observation, near miss, injury/illness, training), you can use those trends to inform your questions. For example, you could target HazCom questions if you’ve seen an increase in labeling issues.

How do you report unsafe acts or unsafe conditions ? What should you do before using a ladder or forklift? Where do you find SDS? What does this pictogram stand for?

Is paid time off an option? Early release? Special seat/parking spot? LOL!
My suggestion would be to make the questions more thought provoking, and possibly related to hits you've seen around the work place that you would give if you were an OSHA inspector.

Accountability: If there were an emergency at the workplace do you have a means/method to account for all members of your department/team?
Have you tested the means/method?

Some other nice safety related prizes could be: smoke detectors, first aid kits, radon detectors , carbon dioxide detectors, flashlights, work gloves.
Some other good questions could be around: emergency evac, haz com (in oshas top 10 every year), loto : what it means if you see something locked out etc. , spills- responding to.

Another prize to think about is a driver safety kit for their car. Or how about a doggie seatbelt? It protects the dogs and it protects the people in the front seat.

Pull the Pin, Aim the Nozzle, Squeeze the handle, Sweep the base of the fire!
