Distance of the Base of Ext Ladder from Wall?
If X = 20 feet, Per OSHA the distance for the extension ladder to be from the wall is X/Y. That distance is?

We have always been taught in the fire service to use a 4 to 1 ratio, or stand with your feet at the heal of the ladder and extend your arm to reach the rung in front of you, this would be a safe climbing angle, also if the ladder was on a solid surface it must be healed by another person.

Way I determine ladder placement. Stand with tires touching the base and stretch my arms out, with hands stretched out I should just touch the ladder. That's how I learned in the fire service 30 years ago. Lol

So this graphic is confusing. It shows x as both the length of the ladder and equal to Y. Anyone want to let OSHA know? LMAO
Also, no one has a 23 foot ladder so OSHA should just make this easier for standard ladder heights. No wonder people get so confused
Good question.
A simple way to determine the correct angle is to put your feet at base of ladder and extend arms to ladder. if you can touch ladder with arms extended it is at proper angle.
