These canines are lethal weapons and must be controlled with public safety as a priority!
This is a reminder for cities and counties with police dogs. These professionally trained protection dogs are impressive in their skills. One brave canine with a strong fighting instinct and high pain tolerance can handle 40 rioters, a job needing 30 officers. However, there should be strict guidelines governing how these canines are housed and boarded with other officers.

Interesting. I'm wondering if there is more to this story then what was told. We had just donated money raised by our employees to a local K-9 Foundation to purchase bullet proof vests for the k-9's. A couple of the deputies came with one of the dogs and did a demonstration. We were told that for the dog it was simply play not viciousness. They are not trained to be vicious. That being said, like any dog, there may have been something else the individual had done that caused the dog to act that way. Plus, they have different personalities just like people. If they were truly a danger to others, then they would not be retired to families.

I have been raised with dogs all of my 70 years! In my married life had 6 Golden Retrievers (48 years) I was raised with a boxer and a couple German Shepherds. My daughter had a two male brother shepherds who are only about 75 pounds. My middle daughter just put down her lab/shepherd mix down. He was 120 pounds and a very imposing dog! Huge Black Shepherd! he was generally gentle, but herded and guarded the grandkids. I would not recommend going into their yard and approach the kids if he did not know you! He was 14 and had cancer.
You are right it is all about the training and socialization. I am generally not afraid of any dog. But I know to watch the signs! My own dog is a a Golden but he was the runt and had to fight for everything in a liter of 12! First Golden I ever had that can turn vicious and quick! When he is around other dogs and people I watch him like a hawk! I watch his eyes and his tail. I keep a pinch collar on him! If his eyes get buggy (so I see the whites!) and his tail goes up I pull him back. If his tail goes down between his legs, I walk him back away and command him into a heal!!! He is about to go bad! But he a small Golden Male at 80 pounds and with the pinch collar I have complete control!
I know some people think pinch collars are barbaric. But I was taught by the American Kennel Club how to use them and think in the long run are very humane! If you have big dogs one of the few ways you can have complete control! If you use a pinch collar the right way, when you tell a big dog to HEAL they will HEAL! My dogs If I say HEAL they will jump back and put their nose on my knee and look up at me! I do not even have to give them a tug!
