Safety Business Idea
Hi everyone-
I have an idea for a remote health and safety advisor service for small to medium sized companies that may not have the resources for full time on site safety support. They would simply pay a monthly fee and my company would provide the following:
-Dedicated EHS advisor to provide consultation and expertise for meetings, incident investigation/root cause analysis and maintain company EHS policies.
-Complete and maintain OSHA logs.
-Safety documents i.e. SDS, toolbox talks, other EHS templates company may need.
-Updates of new regulatory requirements
-Access via email or phone during business hours for EHS consultation.
-Printable EHS signage.
I was thinking of charging around $2500/month, no contracts. Which is a fraction of the price for an on site safety manager. My specific questions are from your experience, do you think there is a market for this? and what would you pay for a service like this? Am I in the ball park with my initial pricing? All feedback would be very helpful. Thank you!

Well I do the same. I offer on site consultation for $2500 - $2000, and and have had some success locally. However, my goal is to never have a full-time job again! I am 70, almost 71. I use my money from my business for my toys that I could never afford when I was working, had a family at home, put daughters through college, weddings, a mortgage, and medical insurance to have to worry about! I will now workup to 20 hours a week, and for a week or two 30. But my working over 40 hours a week are OVER! My wife and three grown daughters are all over me, if they catch me falling back into the old rut of pushing too hard! I can handle one woman, but 4?
I would be glad to talk to you about this offline, via email or phone. I do not feel comfortable sharing customer and business info on a public blog.
For now my thoughts: I think your price is way to high for the small to medium customers that I deal with here in NE WI. In 7 years I, I have only had one customer willing to go with an EHS Software package and that was MSDSonline, for about $5K a year, 6 years ago. Usually the cost of about $5K scares them off. You are talking $12k a year!
Of the items you offer above, the one that could be the most time consuming would be the first. I would take that out of your monthly charge except as an initial question answering service. Hold the rest for side bar business, answering a quick question but charging extra for involved answer n that might require research and or a detailed description (report). An example of such a question might be, "Is this big compactor a Confined Space or How best do I guard this machine?
Bottom line get your price down, but raise the number of customers UP! With 50 customers you could charge $250 a month and make $12,500 a month, and then their would be the rest of your business!
There has to be someone out there with this business model already.
I applaud your enthusiasm! Keep working on it!

Your initial pricing may vary from other's pricing based on where you live. For example, we (Arrow Safety) work all over the US and in other countries, but our rates are based on the market in Glasgow, KY (Small Town, USA). Even if I do work in NYC where the price of everything is outrageous, they still get pricing based on Glasgow, KY market, so they get a seemingly good deal, while Arrow Safety still generates a reasonable profit. For the customers in our local area (and other small towns), the price is typically normal and competitive for everyone else around us, so we have no issue gaining customers there, either.
$2,500 may be acceptable for a larger market, but seem too pricey for a smaller town/community. For us, we don't do anything virtual/remote, but we do offer services like that for customers who don't have the means to employ a full-time safety professional. However, our prices vary based on what they need us to do, how far they need us to travel to their job sites/facilities (to conduct audits/inspections), and how much work they want us to do in a given month. Some customers want us to do very minimal work (25 hours/month for a company w/ 30 employees), whereas others want us to do 50-60 hours/month (e.g., a company with 60 employees or so), so there's a lot of variables here.
You have to evaluate the industry, client location, how much work they want you to do, the type of work they want you to do, etc. I would not recommend setting a flat price across the board, as it may work for some customers, but you may lose money on another customer, so it needs to be somewhat flexible to meet their needs.

Hi, Jared. I offer this as an EHS Consultant and it is generally well received, but at a lower cost for the target market you're talking about. $900-$1500 is the budget range I've encountered over the years. Typically, this would also include regular reporting (like Tier II) and work would ebb and flow over the year (as reporting season is Q1). So maybe I work more in Q1 but I charge a consistent amount monthly for their budgeting. You get a few of those clients and it sure adds up quickly and is helpful. Happy to connect if I can help. ehsconsultingservices.com
