Company Volunteer Events
Looking to see how others are integrating their safety programs with company volunteer events. For example, the company has 20 volunteers that are assisting a local non-profit by performing manual labor around the facility. How are others handling this from an EHS perspective? For example, are you holding pre-event meetings to work out potential hazards, are you offering PPE, are you assigning first aid kits, etc., etc., etc.,? My company does not have any programs in place for volunteer events, so I'm looking to see what others are doing.

Every volunteer event I've seen at previous employers was always seriously lacking EHS if it was on private premises. If this event is on your facility, that's risk and liability. At minimum, they should have a concise safety briefing and issued proper PPE. That covers the basics without being overzealous. I believe when the event is on private property, say Habitat for Humanity, and the person volunteers...the company considers it not their responsibility in the legal sense since they chose to go there. Where that line is with the employer encouraging it..is a question for an attorney. That's my two cents.
