Sorry I am an old Foundry Supervisor turned Personnel Manager that they made “The Safety Guy” on my second day in Personnel. That was 1980 (after being a supervisor for 4 years).
One third day in Personnel the receptionist called me and said there was someone from the Michigan DNR to see ME. I said, “Why you calling me?”
She replies,”You are the only Manager in Personnel today, your boss and Joe are out today. I always call Personnel when I don’t know whom else to call!”
I was not sure what to say to that. The only reason I could guess why the DNR was there was something to do with the Kalamazoo River next to the plant. The only thing I knew about the DNR was that I bought my hunting and fishing licenses from them. I also had no clue who handled water issues for our huge foundry. I knew Plant Engineering managed the water come into and in the plant, so I said, “Call Engineering!”
I figured with doing Personnel, Safety, and Workers Comp work (self-insured) I had enough to do! Been running from the “E” ever since!
