Rust on chains
How do you know if rust on a lifting chain or attachment is too much rust and light affect the lifting capacity ?

ASME B30.9 says "excessive pitting or corrosion" is the removal criteria. Surface rust that can be cleaned off with a wire brush is one thing, but once it starts causing excessive pitting or corrosion, that's when it causes issues.
You also want to look at the minimum thickness of your chain links, based on the nominal size of the chain you have. There's a table within ASME B30.9 that outlines this.
However, always refer to your sling manufacturer's guidelines.

Drew is correct. I inspect a lot of rigging with rust like the picture, from being out in the weather. I look for pitting or excess wear in the pockets of the chain links where they connect to each other.

Does this chain have a "capacity" rating on it?
