Back In the Saddle Again!
I am thankful for my pal Jeff Bowers of Dream Bay Services of Green Bay, WI. Jeff is also a safety consultant and he asked me to tag along with him to perform PIT training at a foundry customer of his.
I started my career in a large iron foundry some 47 years ago as a supervisor. I always spent a lot of time playing with all the "toys" in a foundry and the big ones in the Yard! One of my favorites was one of the many big Cat TowMotors we had. I got on one every chance I got, especially when my General Foreman of the union were not watching.
There is no other industry where the saying applies more than foundry, "You can take the kid out of the foundry, but you cannot take the foundry out of the kid!" If I did not know that before it was proven to me yesterday as I could smell that foundry 2 miles before I ever saw it! The smell of green sand in the morning is as vivid as your first born, even years later! It has been many years since I have been in an iron foundry!
The smell of the green sand brought back all the old lessons, most learned the hard way, like spitting on everything before you touch it!
Thanks Jeff it was a good day!
