Wow Can Only Think of the One!
On LI a few minutes ago I was reading a post by Mark Rubin who is another Ogletree Attorney like Phil Russell, who has postings on OSHA for employers (for some reason I stopped getting Phil's).
Mark had a nice post of the 10 Daily Checklists Items (link below) you must have for Construction per OSHA. I am not a Construction guy but am a Manufacturing guy. I was trying to think of the 10 on Gen Ind but am ashamed can only come up with one . The Daily Checklist for PITs per 1910.178. At Parker we had several more, like for Cranes and Hoists, but they were Corporate Edicts and I didn't think required by OSHA to be done daily? I can think of several things that should be done but not required to be documented by OSHA.
What am I missing?
I know two other things.
#1 as a young foundry supervisor PIT Checklists were one of my top pains in the as_ (butt)! Until I got smart and held their feet to the fire! I gave them two warnings and then they got time off work!
#2 Those checklists are another reason I am not a Construction Man!

A lot of those construction industry requirements transfer over to the equivalent general industry standards. For example, respiratory protection requires a visual inspection before use, as well (1910.134(h)(3)(i)(A)).
In addition to PITs like you mentioned, and respiratory protection mentioned above, other notable pre-shift/pre-use inspections required by general industry standards include, but are not limited to:
• Overhead and gantry cranes (1910.179(j)(2))
• Slings and other rigging components (1910.184(d))
• Ladders (1910.23(b)(9))
• Scaffolding (1910.27 refers you to 1926 Subpart L, which requires it)
• Personal fall arrest systems (1910.140(c)(18))
• Extension cords as well as portable plug- and cord-connected equipment (1910.334(a)(2)(i))
• Electrical test equipment, such as voltmeters (1910.334(c)(2))
• Electrical insulating equipment, such as rubber gloves (1910.137(c)(2)(ii))
• Rope descent systems (1910.27(b)(2)(iv))
• Pull-out devices for mechanical power presses (1910.217(c)(3)(iv)(d))
There are more than the 10 pre-shift/pre-use inspections mentioned above that are required for general industry. Those are just some that I can think of, but I'm sure there are more.
