Prayers to the family employee and all others concerned!
I hate rollers! Frankly, they scare the heck out of me! Very hard to guard and keep people safe! Back in my non-retirement days would see big ones at our rubber (hose) plants when I visited. They used them to flatten scrap before they cut it up to use again. I would fight with Ops (Mfg) as they insisted there was no practical way to guard them and would use a "kill-wire" as an employee was supposed to pull the wire when he/she got caught in the machine. I always thought "kill" was a bad term and the guarding never made sense. When the employee pulled the "kill-wire" they had already lost their fingers (if they were quick & lucky to get off so easy!).
Someone here was NOT lucky! Ruined my day seeing this!

Probably my fear goes way back! One of my earliest memories is watching my mom do laundry in the basement with an old ringer washer! I was probably about 4. That really dates me I suppose! I remember the rollers were yellow, wet, and slimy as my mother put clothes from the washer through the rollers. She took a basket of wet clothes over to the line hung up and started to hang them up. I touched the rollers and I remember she yelled, "Tommy get your fingers away from there, those rollers will bite you!"
She turned her head, smart boy that I was I did it again. This time it did bit and pulled my right hand fingers into the rollers. I could not pull my hand back. As smart as I was, I just watched it roll over my hand, then my wrist and up my arm. I do not remember it hurting till it got to my elbow! So I yelped! My mom looked up and screamed, "Tommy!" In about two leaping bounds she got across the basement and was reaching for the release level, when she tripped. She managed to just reach the lever as it really started to hurt! She yanked my hand out and pulled me to the floor with her!
She counted all my fingers and kissed my right hand and fingers all over! Then she grabbed my hand and pulled me into a chair with her. Bent me over her knee and spanked me like I had never gotten before!
To this day when I see rollers my butt tingles from the spanking I got that day! Probably another reason I hate rollers. I do not think the rollers on the washer would have taken my arm, but you never know!

By "kill wire", do you mean "trip wire"?
Before I was born, one of my sisters had a hand pulled into a home ironing mangle. Besides the damage from the rollers, she suffered severe burns. Siblings told me how horrific the screams were. There is no great solution to rollers.
