Windshield Time
Hi everyone,
I’m curious about your daily commute. How much time do you spend on the road, and what’s your average mileage?
Share your experiences, and let’s discuss the pros and cons.
Personally, I cover 250 miles one way to my work region and commute for an average of 2 hours daily. By the end of the week, I journey another 250 miles back home.

I've traveled quite a bit on the road for work this year. I bought my truck new the last week of January and already have nearly 40,000 miles on it after about 8.5 months. Next year will be a LOT less, though, now that I've hired some more people, opened up a local training center, and intentionally scheduled every other week to work locally only (home every evening).
My business is only 3.5 years in, but we're growing very rapidly (which is a good thing), so we've been taking anything thrown at us to get established. Now that we've done that and I've got 4 people working for me, 2024's focus is to maintain (hopefully grow) the revenue while being home with my wife and kids a lot more.
As much as I've traveled this year, I traveled to China 33 weeks at my old job back in 2017. NEVER AGAIN!

Time in construction was the most. Daily travel that averaged 3-hr, one way trips to sites. Quarterly overnights at various locations. I covered an area from PA to SC. That lessened when I transitioned into a more admin role, but weekly travel of 4-5 hr trips was still common.
My last role was in manufacturing, but I traveled over an hour, daily to get to the site. Add that to the job and callbacks, it got to be too much time away from family.
My current role has me 25-30 minutes away from my house. With who I want to be as a husband and father, it’s a much better fit to have the smaller commute.
There will always be safety jobs, but there will not always be a house full of my children to make precious memories.

I have always been in heavy manufacturing. Usually based in one facility, for a few years I did also cover 10 different locations in 10 widely scattered states. I also had to travel to Divisional Quarters and Corporate Headquarters in two different locations in the Cleveland, OH area. Sometimes I would be sent to perform training or receive it at other divisions for the corporation (we have > 250 locations in the USA). I tried to limit that out of town travel to a couple weeks or so a quarter. I usually had to travel for H&S but also scheduled trips for my HR duties. I was on a travel team to train new HR Managers to the company in self-insured WC. I always loved going on recruiting trips especially to career fairs on college campuses! It was always fun reliving my college days and recruiting young men and women into the corporation! It was all about selling a career and the company.

I drive about 35 miles, or 45 minutes one way every day. It gets to be a little tiresome in the winter when both drives are in the dark. It really helps to have a comfortable, fuel efficient car (35is mpg avg).

Normal day- about 10 minute commute. If I am traveling to one of our other locations, it can be anywhere from about 1 1/4 hour to almost 2 1/2-3 hours.
I travel around 80 miles one way to work daily. Takes about an hour and 45 minutes. My vehicle gets around 27 mpg. I do work from home every 3rd Friday to take care of personal business, which is nice. I listen to audible to pass the time. Last year I listened to over 60 books! I avoid calls and refuse to answer texts while driving. I love what I do or I wouldn't commute this far. I left a job that was literally in my back yard. The environment was toxic and I'd rather drive that far than suffer in a terrible environment to make a living.
An hour and a half in the mornings and a little over 2 hours in the evenings. I have been overseeing contractors at a steel mill for over a year now. 83 miles each way. I put tons of miles on my truck. So far, it has been around 46,480 miles.

I work for the Fire Department at Headquarters. I currently travel 20 minutes/ 8 miles. Early next year we are moving our HQ which will cause this to double.
