Removal criteria for step rolling safety ladder
Hi all,
What are the removal criteria for a step rolling ladder?
What situations or conditions will it be in for it to be removed from service?
Thanks
If a step rolling ladder has a dent or bent railing can it be repaired by welding it in house?
Look at the bent portion of a frame supporting the hand railing,
With this condition should it be removed from service? Or can it be used? Please why can it be used or not used in this condition?
Thank you.

US OSHA allows ladders to be repaired. Whether it’s a good idea is up to you.

Typically, just throw them out and order new ones. Time and convenience are money.
If you are having a high rate of replacement, maybe dig into why they are becoming damaged. I had a facility that would go through these like wildfire. I showed a ROI for platforms and proper stairs. They were bought and put in with proper railing. They dropped their incident rate, WC cost, and repair/replacement cost. I think that entire project was around 100k at that time.

Wow! Any bend is support structure seriously diminishes the load capacity on racking and ladders. I am not a Mechanical or Structure Engineer but I was told once by a BSME from our racking firm that just a little bend can weaken a structure by 50% or more!
That scares the heck out of me in facilities that have heavy dies, patterns, and tooling in their storage racks! A lift truck hits a rack you lower the capacity of the racking by a lot! With large press dies weighing a couple tons it does not take many to max out a rack system in prime condition. With bent racking supports who knows!
John is spot on!
Pre use ladder inspections should look for any defects or damages to a ladder. If any are found the ladder should be taken out of service. There should be a sticker on the ladder that says this information. Also, peoples feedback in the comments are correct- If there is damage to the ladder it will affect the load rating.... Another reason to take it out of service.
