Rigging certification
Am I correct in assuming that a person rigging material has to have an individual certification to do so? Or, is it “allowable” to have an individual who is trained and certified as a competent person to train someone to rig?
Crane lift, argument is being made that since one person is trained it doesn’t matter if the individual who was hurt did not have rigging certification.

Hi Chris,
ASME has a revised standard for this. ASME B30.5. There is a qualified and a certified rigger. Qualified is a person considered qualified by the employer to have the knowledge to rig a part. He has shown the ability to calculate the weight, center of gravity and correct rigging. Certified rigger is one that has been through training, both hands on and classroom and has passed a written and practical test. The person trained, was it by the company or third party? Some third party companies have a train the trainer class to be certified to train others. If in house, you need to be qualified by the employer. It doesn't hurt to go through the certification process. If you are a rigging company that uses mobile cranes, then he should be certified. The guy that got hurt, was he the one rigging and was the certified guy present during the rig?
