Love this question. When I audit management systems, this is one of the things we try to assess. As an organization moves through the continuum, the bar keeps getting raised.
The hardest place to be as a new Safety professional no matter how many years you've worked in the business or for whichever company...is to be the "New Safety guy/gal." You almost need to act like a consultant when you begin b/c you need to see "where we are at" safety-wise. Do we have the required necessary OSHA programs in place. When was the last time those programs, policies, and procedures were reviewed? How is the incident reporting policy? Is it being followed? How does the company sit with their past OSHA 300 logs. How about their past WC claims?
