What's your favorite classroom drill/exercise?
Our first day of our 24-hour confined space rescue class was filled with Legos, 4:1 rope systems, and lots of laughing (and still learning).
Why the Legos, you ask?
It's a communication exercise we do to ensure they can properly communicate with one another. We split the class up into two groups, giving them each an identical set of Legos and each group being in a different room. One group has the instructions and tells the other team how to assemble the Lego set (in this case, a spaceship). At the end of the drill, you compare the sets to see if the 2nd group assembled the Legos correctly.
What does this have to do with confined space rescue?
When seconds count, you have to be able to communicate effectively, as we call in the fire service, a C-A-N report. C-A-N stands for:
- Conditions (What are your current conditions?)
- Actions (what are you doing right now?)
- Needs (what do you need right now?)
What classroom exercise/drill do you enjoy?

No fair, I want to play with legos

Omg this is a genius idea, I love it! Do you use a set that can be put together in like ten minutes or so? I'm looking for more activities to liven up my OSHA 10-hour course!

Great idea Drew!
