Career Advice
Hey everyone, I'm leaving the military after 6 years with 4 years experience in safety (Air Force 4BO). I also have my bachelors in safety. I was wondering if anyone had opinions if staying government or going private sector is best? Also any views/input on working for DOL OSHA or DOE Labs? Id appreciate any feedback!

Get in touch with John Roodhouse and tell him I sent ya. He transitioned out of the military (20 yeras in Air Force) and I did some mentoring with/for him a year or so ago when he was applying for jobs. He works for a DOE facility now, so hopefully he can help you out!

The government job vs. private sector debate is always been a thing.
Pros of government jobs include better job security and benefits for lower pay.
Pros for the private sector include better pay (usually).
The cons are just the opposite. So the questions is what's more important to you.
I tried to get a civilian safety position with the Air Force about two years ago but couldn't make it past the initial screening because even though I am an Air Force veteran, I wasn't a war time vet. Because of your recent service, you will likely have a leg up on the competition for a federal job.

The last OSHA Inspector I worked with had left the Navy and joined OSHA. He was only a few months in but seemed to be enjoying it. I can give you his contact information if you want. Email me Matthew.Broker@wisteeltube.com
