Stacking loose cartons
I'm trying to get a better understanding about stacking loose cartons on the top-level rack in warehouse. The product being stored is furniture. I'm being told that we can't stack boxes on that top level unless they are banded or stretched wrap. Is that correct?

Any material just has to be stable and secured to keep from falling. Stretch wrap and banding is just one way of doing that.

Sounds like where a best practice is being applied.
Think about retrieval from the top rack and what a worst case scenario could be.

Floor Common sense to me is that is a good practice.

Another thing to consider when ‘loose’ stacking on warehouse racking is how high you stack as well. One warehouse I worked in adjusted the top rack to the same height as top of the uprights and stacked on top, which exceeded their high-piled fire permit.
When the local AHJ arrived for inspection, they had to figure out what to do with an entire warehouse worth of top shelf storage, because our permits did not include the space above our racks.
