Nice article Mark-Anthony! How is Cleopatra? (Sorry could not resist! Bet you never heard that one before? :) )
I would add a trick or two I learned. #1 I was a former Supervisor and General Foreman for many many years before I ever became a Personnel/Safety Guy! I knew who the Sergeants and Lieutenants were out on the floor were and how then thought! Spend time with them and have antipathy for their jobs, they are the "busiest" people in your organization! If you don't believe me, just ask them. (In 68 years I have yet to meet a good supervisor that is not BUSY!) Get them on your side! Catching them in an office bring them a cup of coffee, it is a wise investment!
#2 Walk around with gloves in your back pocket! Walk up to an employees and ask them how they do their job. Once you have it and feel you know the job well enough try it for yourself! Show then you are not just a guy or gal that sits in an office and you are not afraid to get your hands dirty!
#3 If you have multiple shifts SPEND TIME on those shifts! Understand what it feels like to be working while your family is home eating supper without you! Or why midnight shift employees feel like it is them against the world! Along with the above and 3rd shift what it is like to have a major problem at 3:00 AM and face it alone! I hated hated midnight shift! That is why I forced myself to spend time with them!
Just a few tricks from a real old Safety Guy!
