Could not agree more Mohamed! Speaking as an old Foundry Supervisor, I was taught a few things "out of the box" as a young management trainee about Safety! #1 My employees were MY RESPONSIBLITY! #2 The vast majority of accidents are due to behavior, and the root cause of this wrong behavior was MANAGMENT's responsibility, because unsafe behavior was overlooked. Management was couplable in allowing a pervasive environment where unsafe behavior was tolerated! A example Lockout. You must ensure you do more than just say, "Lockout is unsafe! or You must Lockout!" You must make employees understand they have NO CHOICE but to Lockout! Further your words must complement you actions. You say Lockout it is important, so you must show it, by asking employees about it and complementing them when you see it done (so they know you are watching). #3 Most importantly, as you are rushing around your department you must LOOK and watch! When you see something that appears wrong ASK WHY and fix it. If it looks, feels, sounds, smells, tastes, or appears unsafe, it is UNSAFE fix it! In 47 years of doing this business these basic tenants have only been strengthened!
It is a wonderful complement to be chosen as a Leader! Be Proud as you should be, or don't accept the position. But understand there is tremendous responsibility along with it! My $.02

As I always say, "Don't make excuses. Make it happen!".

Yes, as safety professionals, we need to always be thinking of creative solutions for our problems. The safety profession is fast-paced and requires someone who can adapt to issues but can also think and come up with solutions before asking management for their ideas on solutions. Come to management with your ideas on solutions!

Completely agree!! It takes a spirit of excellence to serve others this way. Its unfortunate how many professionals in the industry don't want to say yes to a solution because of the added work it might create for them initially.

so.... are we part marketing, part sales, part operations?

Always ask the hard questions...... Sometimes the simple question is the hardest. Where do you think accountability starts?
