HSSE Consulting
Hello!
Is anyone here a consultant? I am interested in starting an LLC (part time). I am reading ASSE’s business development guide, but hoping to have a few mentors along the way! Thanks!!

I stated my own consulting firm almost 3 years ago and have 3 employees working for me. Ask away and I'll do the best I can to help you out or point you in the right direction.

I retired 5 years from the Corporate World from HR and H&S. I wanted to start a part-time LLC. I stated as a HR consulting business but failed as I discovered their are millions of us Baby Boomer "Personnel Mangers Retiring", and many want to do the same thing! The competition was fierce to say the least! I found a niche as a "H&S consultant, with a HR/Manufacturing Management Perspective" (I spent as much time in MFG as I did Personnel/HR). I especially found a niche in "one-person shows" who also have jobs in HR, Mfg, or Engineering. I can relate as that is how I learned H&S.
Bottom line I had to eat my words to the man that made me a Safety Director upon my second day in Personnel back in 1980 after spending 4 years on the foundry floor as a Supervisor. I had a few choice words for him after thinking I had paid my dues in heck on the floor. I had to pray to him a prayer of thanksgiving and apology as he is with the Big Foundryman in the Sky now! But that proved to be a blessing in disguise!
Like Drew I can help you, I formed two LLCs and made two web pages, the last two of each by myself! As an HR Manager I must advise if you are still employed and a Salaried Exempt employee that you inform your employer. Mine would have taken a very dim view of me, working for someone else, even myself. They would also wonder how I had the time to work for other people when I was supposed to be working for them, and make time for myself and my family! My company would also be very concerned about my use of resources and conflict of interest. So be careful! Again I can help.

I just started mine in September. It has been slow going. Anyone have any suggestions on ways to reach out for business. I did 1 networking event for an industry in my area and had some interest but nothing yet.

I started my own consulting business Aug 2019 with TONS of lessons learned along the way. I could not stress the importance of outsourcing tasks that don't bring you joy. As a consultant, you're now a business owner, payables receivable, purchasing, sales, client services, product development, and worker - be very aware of your energy.
Don't just throw spaghetti up on the wall when deciding what services to offer - do your work to see what brings you into your "zone of genius" and develop services/offerings from that.
All the best in your business.
