“You have the VAs Psychiatry Service. Your call will be answered in the order it was received”.
20 minutes on hold listening to this message over and over.
Then the line goes dead because the automated system hangs up on you!
Is it any wonder so many veterans commit suicide every day?

Oh goodness!
That's no good!
There are other entities out there to help.
Check out Vets2Industry's free resources listings. There are quite a few with mental health, and I remember that we had a keynote speaker that specifically helped with suicide cases. If I remember correctly, he's a retired Admiral who lost his son to suicide and started collaborating with mental health professionals nationwide specifically because of this. If you need the name for his entity, I could probably go through our old events and find him - it was a couple years ago.
Here's the list for free mental health entities - all have been researched prior to being listed:

I am so sorry Daniel! I am not a Vet, but grew up with two Vet parents. My mom and dad were Korean War Vets (Army). In the late 80's with booth of them in declining health I had to deal with the VA quite a bit. My mother did not want to deal with the VA, but my dad had been wounded in Korea. He had Chinees shrapnel in his back and severely frost bitten feet. He was a truck driver with Marine units and was wounded at Chosin and evacuated. In later years the toes were a constant medical problem. The problem was that a lot of Korean War service records were burned up in a huge fire at a Governmental Records Storage Facility in Missouri in the 70's so it was difficult to prove a service related injuries on either of my parents (although my mom was not near combat she was cook on Okinawa). Working with he VA back then was horrible! My dad was really into the Vets stuff and wanted them to take care of him! Getting them to do that was tough!
Sometimes I ask myself how my life might had been different had I accepted the USMCR commission? Sometimes I wish I would have taken it in 1976. I even feel a little guilty I did not follow in my parents and most of my uncles footsteps. But now I am glad I do not have to fight with the VA again.
My dad was a staunch Democrat, and got help with the VA from Tip O'Neal (Speaker of the House). But he also got quite a bit of help from a Republican Congressman from Ohio, my dad lived in Michigan. But the records problem was always a barrier!
Good Luck Daniel! I honor your service! I am sorry about your dad. You are in my prayers!

I'm sorry Daniel. First off, thanks for your service. Although I never served I work with a bunch of folks who did serve, and I'm connected with a bunch of folks on LI. Seems like there's a pretty tight network, if you'd like I can try to make some intros. I'm sure a lot have gone through what you have.
Sorry I can't be more help. Sounds like you're in a tough spot. Praying for you and your family.
