How often do you interface with your insurance company?
Insurance companies seem like one of the most underutilized resources in our field. Lots of well educated and experienced folks with an incentive to make your worksite safer. I’m trying to learn more about insurance and HR as I study for the ASP exam.
Curious how often SK folks are actually interfacing with their insurance companies. Let me know!

That is a tough question if you work for a large Corporation that is self-insured. Technically and Legally we do not have "Insurance Companies." We use Third Party Administrators (TPAs) that pays the bills and administer the claims, but they use OUR money. If you work for a large employer your medical insurance is usually handled the same way. Most of all the large insurance companies, Blue Cross, Liberty, Travelors, Wausau, Hartford, Aetna, and many others are both TPAs (for the big companies) and Insurance Companies (or in the WC world "Carriers). If you work for a large company you may think you have Blue Cross for your medical insurance, but chances are your company is really paying the bills! Again WC works the same. My corporation was self-insured for almost all insurance.
Usually it took to long to explain to employees the "self-insured" thing. So we told the employees the "insurance company" would handle their claim. We also "blamed" the "insurance company" for decisions that were made. In HR we were taught to always try to be the "good-guys" or the "Cowboys with the White Hats!" The insurance company were the "Black Hats". In reality we actually had quite a lot to do with any claim especially it it was accepted or not. Not so much on medical, but on WC I discussed every claim with the TPA. After every discussion I was asked, "Do we accept, Investigate it thoroughly, of Take the Gloves off (fight it!). In my company EHS did not deal with WC directly, or OSHA 1904, HR did. My H&S background came in handy for all this.
So to answer you question, even in HR, I rarely talked to an "insurance company". But I talked to the TPA daily. I had them on speed dial!

Now I work as a consultant working with smaller companies that are not self-insured. Some of the free resources the insurance companies offer their customers is amazing! I have two customers that have Liberty Mutual and what they have is really something! Travelors and Harford have good stuff too!
Most small companies use brokers to buy their insurance! Sort of like your local Insurance Salesman for auto insurance. Sometimes they have excellent resources too!

I’ve had differing levels of involvement depending on the role I’ve had and the structure of the company. The best are typically folks with insurance backgrounds who lean on EHS for technical specifics. It really depends on the setup at your company.

There was no option for "every time I move" which is about every 2 years. 😂
But if you're talking about work stuff, that's not a job I take on, but my boss does it annually, so I put that.

I can help anyone figure out how to leverage their insurance risk control resources!!
