Respiratory Protection Week - Day 1

Today is the start of Respiratory Protection Week. Each day this week, I'll be posting various respiratory protection information, tips, and other relevant information.

Day 1: 𝐌𝐞𝐝𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐥 𝐄𝐯𝐚𝐥𝐮𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐏𝐫𝐨𝐜𝐞𝐝𝐮𝐫𝐞𝐬
OSHA requires that employers identify a physician or other licensed health care professional (PLHCP) to perform medical evaluations using a medical questionnaire or an initial medical examination that obtains the same information as the medical questionnaire. In addition, the medical evaluation must obtain the information requested by the questionnaire in 1910.134, Appendix C, Part A, Sections 1 and 2.

If a follow-up medical examination is required, the employer must include any medical tests, consultations, or diagnostic procedures that the PLHCP deems necessary to make a final determination.

Although a pulmonary function test (PFT) is not specifically required by OSHA's Respiratory Protection standard as part of the medical evaluation, if the PLHCP determines it's necessary in order to fully evaluate the employee's health and obtain all required information in order to make a determination, then it becomes an OSHA requirement.
