Guarding for vertical band saw
Any ideas for guarding for this machine? The material can vary in size. Fixed Cage with interlocks perhaps?

I’m not the machine guarding expert but I saw this during my internet search. Looks like you just position the shield so it doesn’t interfere with the material being fed into the saw.
I’m surprised they don’t send these machines to the customer with the guards attached.

Here's one I've used in the past that is adjustable.

If that doesn't work, reach out to Joseph Gasparino or Steve Misuraca at Odiz Safety (

) and tell him I sent ya (no, I don't get any kickback - he's just a good busines partner of ours). He'll take good care of you. They make custom guarding for difficult situations.

My experience with bandsaws is that the blade guard is adjustable. When being used the blade guard should be moved down so only enough of the blade is exposed to allow the product to pass. If you keep the blade guard within 1/8 of an inch above the product, it is unlikely that enough the blade is exposed to result in injury.

I have not called them in a long time. But if you are in the Midwest call Rockford Systems in Rockford, ILL. They are the best!
Some of the new Bandsaws have self adjusting Point-of-Operation guarding. Those are good! The old ones are PAINS! I hate them! Someone with raise the guard for a large piece of stock and then just leave the PoO unguarded! OSHA must not bother writing people up for these! As I see them all the time! I tell my customers but I know they do not do anything!
Drill Presses are another! I even called our local OSHA Office and asked if they cited employers for all the drill presses they see without PoO guarding. This experienced CHSO told me, "Of course I write people up for Drill Presses!" She then winked at me! She said she had issued a citation pre-covid for PoO on a drill press when a woman had lost some hair and scalp in a drill.
