Safety pros with multiple locations, how do you manage when you’re not present?
When I was working my last job I was responsible for EHS at multiple locations and found it incredibly difficult to manage those locations effectively when I wasn’t around. Those of you in that situation, do you have any tips that make your life easier when managing EHS remotely?

One thing to do is to find a person that can take the lead and own safety at a site and start funneling things through them. Unless there is site ownership of safety, one person managing is very unmanageable.
It’s extremely important to work with leadership and appoint someone there as the EHS liaison who has authority and some accountability to address and I face with EHS issues while you are not at the facility. This wouldn’t be a full time roll but a part time role that could also help bolster ones career. It would be helpful if you could also provide this resource some training (3rd party) as well as internal regarding safety, health and environmental regulation , requirements and company policies/best practices.
Great points so far. Liason is vital. I was raoming for 30-40 active smaller construction sites regularly. We put the onus on our superintendents.
Additionally you want to ensure you push forvopen communication whenever possible. Push for supers to always ask questions. Offer to help with the details. Try and generally be a resource so that your onsite people are coming to you with concerns.
Ive found explaining things from our safety/risk management perspective helps to bridge that gap as well. Open up the bigger company picture we are looking at from our role.

A great topic!

I have key selected employees that we use at each facility to ensure compliance and notifications. This employees know their responsibilities and roles and they are listed in all EHS documents as such.
I think it is vital to have someone who can be your eyes and ears on site when you cannot be there. This person has to have the same commitment to safety that you do as well as an understanding of what you would expect when you are there.
