Permanent extension cords
How long do you allow them to be used onsite? Does OSHA provide a number of days an extension cord can be plugged in before becoming out of compliance? We have a number of permanent extension cord fixtures onsite that I’m trying to mitigate. Want to know if there’s an OSHA reg I can help argue my cause

I'm not sure of a specific regulation. We don't allow extension cord use over 30 days. If they are used over 30 days we figure out a way to run permanent power to that area.

1910.305(a)(2) is the reference your looking for.

According to the Fire Code, extension cords are only allowed to be used temporarily. This by definition means that they can only be used to power something that is used and then it is unplugged. Extension cords can ever be used in place of what should really be permanent wiring.
So if you are using an extension cord to power portable electrical equipment, it is legal. When I was performing fire inspections of schools we would find computers, copy machines, and other permanent equipment using extension cords. These are all violations of the fire code.
I've seen (but don't endorse) entire cubicle clusters permanently powered by extension cords.
We try and keep it to 7 days max (unless there's a major project going on). As far as an OSHA reg I'm not sure of one.
