How many HR employees does your company have, and who serves as their alternate?
In my experience most facilities only have one or two HR employees. If all HR personnel are out, which department takes over? In my case that would be me, the safety manager. Is this the case in your facility?

HR is a lean group. At my present employer we have about a hundred employees and our Office Manager handles HR, although the corporate office provides legal assistance and covers hiring. At a former employer there were around 700 employees and I guess five who covered HR. The count was one manager, one specifically for union, one for benefits, one for general support, and one for payroll.
I’m with a large company so we have a big HR presence. My specific site has about 8 HR reps that handle different groups/units. Somebody on their team is usually available to cover when others are on PTO.

Yes! you and I seem to be in the same boat. We have one HR employee at our plant (~130 employees) and when she is out - like she is this week. The majority of HR responsibilities fall on me. Luckily, our HR manager doesn't mind me bothering her on vacation, but I definitely find this added responsibility to be somewhat of a stressor.
