Confined space: does your attending perform the rescue, or do they contact first responders
Question came in today that made me think. During confined space entry, is your attending/supervisor the one that would perform rescue and retrieval, or are they trained to call first responders to perform that?

Our practice is as long as the entrant is attaches to the fall protection retreival system (harness, retractor/retreival device and tripod) the attendand will pull them up.(do the retreival). If they are not attacked and are unresponsive then we call for rescue(911).
My experience is the attendant/hole-watch never participates in rescue. The attendant’s role is observation, monitoring and communication. The attendant calls for a rescue or assistance.

Only if you have a tripod or some kind of retrieval device. We have that plus use a radio if 911 needs to be called if we cannot handle it. However attendant never enters the confined space personally.
