Fit testing for N95 facepiece respirators
Is it mandatory that people wearing the N95 masks be fit tested?

Not that I work in a hospital (thank god), but it seems unreasonable to expect all those doctors and nurses to go through the fit testing process to wear these. Can anyone point to the OSHA reg that would require such testing?

It is required... I have fit tested around 300 pediatric drs in the last week... you need to be fit tested annually
This is the link for the directive that was issued regarding healthcare providers and respiratory fit testing. Hope it helps. https://www.osha.gov/memos/2020-03-14/temporary-enforcement-guidance-healthcare-respiratory-protection-annual-fit

It is mandatory. Anyone that is "required" to wear a respirator (filtering-facepieces included) by law/statute/regulation, or if your accident prevention plan states they must wear one for procedures that may not be required by law, those persons must be fit tested.
For instance, sweeping does not typically require respirator use, but if you have an accident prevention plan that states they need to wear one when they are sweeping the floors (concrete, sawdust, etc.) then it becomes law (for your company) and is enforceable by OSHA (or your states version). This is one of the reasons OSHA will ask for your accident prevention plan. They are looking for what you've written, and are looking for what you say you're going to do versus what you are actually doing.
I've fit tested many sites for filtering-facepieces. Many sites, however, just tell employees that face masks are available for voluntary use and then are required to train them and have them sign an Appendix D from 1910.134.
The drawback from voluntary use face masks is the abuse of telling people they are "voluntary" then finding out the use is required by law or they don't still follow through with Appendix D.
